Dear Mr. Archive,

It's that seasonal time of year again when CEF hosts it's now annual Creative Decoration Upcycling Workshops. These fun and educational art and craft sessions help children to make a range of festive decorations, bags and wrapping paper from waste.

MP900431285                                    Christmas Creative Decorations Upcycling

Lifetime Lab, Saturday 1st December 2012

Morning 11am -1pm or Afternoon 2pm -4pm

BOOKING ESSENTIAL

These workshops are free for children aged 4 and up.  Parents must remain with children for the duration of the workshop.

Places are limited so please register your children by completing the Form and returning to bernadette@cef.ie

We will need you to raid your rubbish bins for as much of the following as you can to bring with you on the day (any other interesting bits and pieces heading for your bins most welcome too), so start collecting now!

  • Fabric scraps - especially christmassy colours or sparkly
  • Plastic milk cartons - all sizes
  • Yogurt drink/probiotic drinks small white bottles
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cereal boxes
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and once we have received your application we will confirm by email if a place is available. As we always have far more interest than places, we apologise in advance to anyone who we don't have space for.

Avoid Waste this Christmas by altering Consumption

Whilst the workshops help children learn how to creatively turn waste into something useful, at this time of year us adults also need to be conscious of the additional waste we accumulate through our shopping choices, some facts on waste created at Christmas time:

Over the Christmas there is a 30% increase in packaging waste that is created, the total being around 75,000 tonnes - consisting of some 170 million recyclable containers, enough steel to replicate Dublin's spire 4 times over (Repak fact)

Almost 40% of all batteries sold each year are sold at Christmas time - approx 32 million batteries weighing in at 800 tonnes. (ERP-Recycling)

We use approx 800 tonnes of wrapping paper = 13, 600 trees, How much of this is recycled or re-used?? As well as this we send an estimated 50 million Chrsitmas cards each year

This Christmas be aware of the costs of landfill, recycling and reprocessing. Re-use what you can and prevent accumulating extra waste by shopping wisely.  Not only are we helping the environment but we will invariably end up saving ourselves money!

Bernie
