Climate Law Hearings in the Dail
The Oireachtas environment committee will begin 3 full days of hearings on the Government's draft Bill. They continue on Monday 8th and Friday 12th.
There is a really interesting line-up of witnesses and it promises to be a lively discussion. It is a significant opportunity to deepen political and public understanding of climate change generally and to strengthen the Bill itself. Hot topics will include the need for a 2050 target in the law (it only has a 2020 target) and the role of the "independent" advisory body (which currently can't publish its own reports).
To come and sit in the gallery for part of the hearings all you need to do is this:
• Call the Dáil on 01-6183000
• Ask for the office of one of your local TDs. You can see who your TDs are here.
• Ask your TD to put your name down to come and watch the hearings from the public gallery.
The schedule for the Committee hearings is online here. Friday's speakers included Birdwatch Ireland, Trócaire, IBEC and Stop Climate Chaos. Monday includes the IFA, Irish Environmental Network, the former Scottish Minister for Climate Change and Oisin Coughlan, Director, Friends of the Earth. Lord David Puttnam has been invited for Friday 12th. If you can't make it to Leinster House you can watch the hearings live here

Notice from GMO Watch with regard to EC Market Authroisation of Genetically Engineered Maize
We would like to inform you that on 11 July, the EU Commission and representatives from EU Member States will meet again to vote on the market authorisation of the genetically engineered maize SmartStax for use in food and feed. SmartStax is a joint Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences crop plant that produces six insecticidal proteins and is tolerant to two herbicides. Together with SmartStax, another nine new variants of genetically engineered maize will be on the agenda in July, all of them produce insecticidal toxins and are resistant to herbicides. One is sold under the brand name Powercore. Furthermore, pollen from genetically engineered maize MON810 is about to receive an authorisation for usage in food such as honey.

...Testbiotech is demanding a new and comprehensive risk assessment of these genetically engineered plants, the authorisation procedure to be suspended and efficient measures implemented to stop its import into the EU. In an email action several thousand people have already urged the EU Commission to prevent it from allowing SmartStax to be sold in the EU. More information here.
