Dear Mr. Archive,

There are still places available at the Free Childrens Art Workshops which will take on Saturday 9th June at the Lifetime Lab in the Morning from 10am – 12.30pm and Afternoon from 1.30pm – 4pm.

The workshops are to highlight and celebrate World Environment Day and will be facilitated by the endlessly creative Jessica Mason to create artistic pieces celebrating our environment.  The theme this year is the "green economy" and Jessica in a fun way will also help the children reflect what this means to them.

This is a free workshop for children aged 7 and up.  Parents are not obliged to stay for the duration of the workshops but are very welcome to.  No need to do the usual collecting of materials, Jessica will take care of that.

Places are limited so please register your children by replying to bernadette@cef.ie as soon as possible.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and once we have received your application we will confirm by email (due to leave after the Bank Holiday weekend) if a place is available.

Best regards,

Bernie Connolly

Dear Mr. Archive,
CEF hosted a very successful Growing Seminar last Saturday at Farranree Community Centre.  Thanks to all of you who attended, participated in the presentations and facilitated the allotment and garden visits. Almost 50 people attended with a a wide representation both in the audience and the range of speakers.  I will be forwarding a follow-up email on the event shortly with links to the videos (once Mike Hobbs has done his magic editing) and further information. In a similar vein Cork County Council has identified May as the month to build awareness of composting.

CEF would like to highlight Biodiversity Day with the theme this year on Marine Biodiversity, Cork is lucky to have a significant portion of the overall coastal area of the country and May 22nd is a day for all of us to highlight and celebrate the rich biodiversity of our seashore and seas.

May is Compost Awareness Month in Cork County
Cork County Council is supporting a number of events at Garden Centres around the County. Environmental Days, including compost demonstrations and talks which take place at:
12th May              Green Barn, Killeagh
                            The Secret Gardener, Newmarket
13th May              Hosfords Garden Centre, Enniskeane
19th May              Griffins Garden Centre, Dripsey
                            Clonakilty Garden Centre (Lisavaird Coop)
27th May             Blackwater Garden Centre, Youghal
                           Dunsland Garden Centre, Glanmire

Additional talks and demonstrations are welcome, if  you or anyone you know is interested in getting involved please contact Mary Stack, Environmental Awareness Officer, Cork County Council at 021 4532744 or Mary.Stack@corkcoco.ie

Further information on reducing waste and composting include programmes such as the “Stop Food Waste” run by the EPA and the Irish Peatland Conservation Council have a feature on Wildlife Gardening and Composting with lots of useful tips, you can check it out here.

Thursday 10th May:         Green Drinks, LV Bar, McCurtain Street 6.30pm -7.30pm – last informal get together before a break over the Summer months. Please do drop in to meet new people or catch up on old friends. All welcome.

Tuesday 22nd May:           International Day for Biological Diversity, this year the theme is Marine Biodiversity. The ocean covers 71 % of the surface area of the globe, and constitutes over 90 % of the habitable space on the planet, “From space, the planet is blue. From space, the planet is the territory. Not of humans, but of the whale.” Heathcote Williams, Whale Nation.

The ocean world is in all our daily lives. Our seas provide us with food (15% of the dietary intake of animal protein) substances derived from seaweeds stabilise and thicken creams, sauces, and pastes, are mixed into paint and used to make paper and even in skin lotion and toothpaste. Many marine plants and animals also contain a multitude of substances already being used, or identified as being of potential use, in medicines. Most importantly of all, tiny marine plants called phytoplankton produce energy, like plants on land, through photosynthesis. As a result of that photosynthesis, they release oxygen. In fact, phytoplankton release half of all oxygen in the atmosphere. Without life in the ocean, there would be no life on Earth.

CEF in partnership with the Caha Centre is running a Workshop and we have sponsored an animated film to highlight the importance of Marine Biodiversity. However, May 22nd is an opportunity for any group or individual to celebrate and highlight the rich tapestry of the nearby sea and shore environment. Cork is a coastal county so why not visit your own local shoreline, take a trip on the sea or if diving is your thing explore the depths. If you would like to run an event and advertise through our website we would be happy to promote it for you.

Nationally the following Seminar takes place in Dublin and for further information check out the website and the report “One Ocean, Many Worlds of Life”.
